Family caregivers can be under a tremendous amount of pressure. Some are taking care of two households while others are trying to juggle work, caregiving, and an active social life. Even for those who have the ability to commit their full attention to a loved one in need, the physical demands can leave them feeling depleted. Fortunately, there are lifestyle choices that can increase energy and keep you from reaching for the chocolate chip cookie and cup of coffee come 3pm.

Nutrition.

Food really is medicine. The nutrients found in your choice of food can increase your energy or plummet it. Foods that are particularly energy producing include fruit and nuts, whole-grains such as sprouted-wheat bread topped with almond butter or avocado, baked sweet potatoes, hummus enjoyed with triangles of pita bread or sliced raw vegetables.

Water.

Your body is made up of more than 50 percent water. It’s essential for carrying nutrients to the cells and taking toxins and waste away from cells. Fatigue is often one of the first signs of dehydration. Keep a glass of water by your side and don’t forget to drink it throughout the day.

Sleep.

That cup of coffee you reached for at 3pm as well as that second glass of wine you enjoyed with dinner to help you relax may both play havoc with a good night’s sleep. Sleep is essential to keeping one’s energy up and at its peak levels. Other tools that help create a good night’s sleep is going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, limiting the intake of water a few hours before bed, and eating a light dinner as well as a light snack at bedtime such as a glass of warm milk or herbal tea and a banana.

Exercise.

Exercise is a crucial component of a plan to increase one’s energy. Aerobic exercise is particularly beneficial. If possible, take at least 30 minutes a day to bicycle, walk, hike, or swim. If it’s difficult to leave your parent for that length of time, consider getting some DVDs, taking a class with your parent such as Tai Chi or yoga, or enjoying a walk out in nature. Any type of activity that gets your body moving will, in the long run, increase your energy.

Elder Care Provider.

In order to operate at your peak, you are going to need to take some time to relax and rejuvenate. If possible, take at least two days off during the week to do just that and don’t forget to include some activities that you truly love. An elder care professional is a professional care provider who can support and assist your parent when you’re not there—leaving you free to truly enjoy your day without worries.
