Causes of Frequent Urination in the Elderly
Frequent urination is often seen as a normal sign of aging, and it very well can be. This is, in part, due to the normal changes that occur to the bladder muscle which can lead to incomplete emptying. It can also be caused by consuming diuretic substances such as coffee and alcohol, or taking diuretic medications. However, it can also be caused by underlying diseases. Many of these have a much better prognosis if caught in their early stages.
What is Normal?
Frequency of urination varies widely from person to person and can range anywhere from three to seven times per day. If you notice your parent traveling to the bathroom more frequently or exhibiting other symptoms such as fever and back pain or night sweats and a cough, make an immediate appointment with their health care provider.
Diseases Associated with Frequent Urination
- Diabetes is the most common cause of frequent urination. Other symptoms may include excessive thirst, extreme fatigue, blurry vision and sores that do not heal.
- Urinary tract infections are also common causes in both men and women as they age. Other symptoms may include feeling a persistent need to urinate, cloudy or dark urine, fatigue, fever and pain in low back, abdomen or bladder.
- Benign prostatic hyperplasia is an enlargement of the prostate gland and is common in men over 50. This is often accompanied by frequent urination at night.
- Overactive bladder syndrome involves the sudden, uncontrollable contraction of the bladder. This leads to unexpected frequent urination and nighttime urination. The onset may be so sudden that you are unable to get to the bathroom on time.
- Kidney stones can lead to frequent urination. Normally, this is also accompanied by a severe pain on the side of the abdomen or in the back. Nausea, vomiting and sweating can also occur.
Helping your Loved One
Once the diagnosis is made, the treatment can be determined. If it is simply a case of decreasing muscle control of the bladder, consider helping your loved one find incontinence products that will help them remain confident when in public. This condition can often lead to isolation which can result in loss of muscle tissue as well as depression. These days, there are many styles and types of products that can be worn discretely. Have a tote bag ready for your parent that includes these products, wipes and a change of clothes that they can take with them on outings.
