Nighttime Incontinence Prevention Tips for Seniors

Caregiver in West Windsor NJ

Incontinence is a common problem among older adults, especially at night. Also known as nocturia, nighttime incontinence causes elders to wake up several times a night to urinate. While some Caregiver-in-West-Windsor-NJseniors are able to make it to the toilet, others are not so lucky. Not only does this bladder issue cause accidents to frequently occur, it can also lead to restless nights and exhaustion during the day.

This problem can be extremely embarrassing for the elder to endure and can even cause them to isolate themselves from the outside world. With the help of professional caregivers, here are some ways to help prevent incontinence from occurring to your loved one.

  • Limit fluid intake. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day can be beneficial to the body by keeping it hydrated. However, there are a wide range of drinks that can cause incontinence to occur, including coffee, tea, and alcohol. Limit how much of these beverages are consumed by your loved one.
  • Stop drinking 2-3 hours before bedtime. Drinking any fluid, including water, too close to bedtime can increase the risk of having accidents at night. Make sure the senior stops drinking at least 2 hours before bed.
  • Go to the bathroom. Before heading off to sleep, encourage the elder to try to use the bathroom. The more they are able to empty their bladders before going to sleep, the lower their risk of having an accident will be.
  • Keep a food journal. Have your loved one jot down all of the foods and drinks they have each day. Then, find out what days an accident occurred in order to help figure out what foods or drinks caused the incontinence to happen.
  • Be patient. Accidents can still occur, even after following these tips. Your loved one will probably be feeling embarrassed, so help ease their humiliation with patience. By calmly helping them clean up and letting them know that it is ok will help ease their nerves.
  • Get the right equipment. Prepare the elder for the next accident by having waterproof bedding, incontinence pads and pants, and absorbent undersheets. While this will not prevent incontinence from occurring, it will prepare your loved one for the possibility of having another accident.

Incontinence can be a serious problem for any adult over the age of 50. However, there are several ways you can help them feel more comfortable and less ashamed when coping with this health problem. Try these tips in order to reduce the amount of accidents the elder has.
